CHANCE Field Courses

A CHANCE field course is an academic adventure both in, and out of, the field. It is actually a set of two courses taken sequentially, but as a unit. The first is an online course taken during a late spring semester. The second is the field research trip (practicum) which provides real-life and hands-on research and conservation experiences. In the field, participants work alongside field-based scientists and conservationists to unmask environmental issues, experience new cultures and humanitarian needs, explore unique ecosystems and learn about the life that is intertwined within them, and take part in environmental conservation efforts that are both timely and relevant.

Each CHANCE field embedded program strictly employs the "Field Course Experiential Learning Model" (Zervanos and McLaughlin, 2003; McLaughlin, 2005; McLaughlin et al., 2018), which evolved from repeated short-term study abroad (embedded) field course experiences in selected biomes around the world over a six-year period. Assessment of student learning guided the development of the integrated three-part course model, which includes pre-trip assignments (preparation), a field-based practicum (experience), and post-trip assignments (reflection) that encourage the integration and application of what has been learned (McLaughlin and Johnson, 2006). Importantly, each program can be considered a powerful tool for effectively understanding and promoting global environmental sustainability and stewardship.
