CHANCE Fellow Leads Reforestation & Recycling Efforts

CHANCE Fellow, Vlad, planting tree sapling in a reforestation event.

Vlad Ghenu, a Romania 2021 CHANCE Fellow, is a 3rd year biochemistry major at the Faculty of Biology of the University of Bucharest. He credits his experience in the immersive environmental CHANCE program with reshaping his perspective on all aspects of his life. As Vice President of Biology Students' Association at the University of Bucharest, he put his new drive for conservation into action to further the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. He enrolled his Student Association in the first edition of "Students are Planting" as part of Unifest, a student festival organized by the Romanian Students' Union. This inaugural event took place in November 2021. Alongside 80 volunteers from 16 other student associations, the groups planted over 400 oak saplings in the Comana Natural Park. The event was such a success that the associations already have plans to return there in the spring for an even bigger reforestation event.

Additionally, Vlad is overseeing and participating in another project called Eco-Sesi which is short for Eco-Session. This recycling project places collection points throughout his university's campus to collect paper and then sends it to a recycling facility to be processed after exams.

Congrats, Vlad! Keep leading for the future!
